Sioux Falls Shooting: Officer Down After Gunfire, Massive Police Response in South Dakota

An officer-involved shooting is under investigation in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, after a subject allegedly opened fire on responding police officers.

A major police response is under way in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, following an officer-involved shooting in which a subject reportedly fired shots at responding law enforcement personnel. Initial information from the developing scene indicates there are reports of an officer down, although authorities have not yet publicly confirmed the officer’s condition or released details concerning possible casualties. Police were still working to secure the area as the incident unfolded.

The shooting appears to have developed from an initial weapons-related call rather than a pre-planned law enforcement operation. Early reports indicate officers were responding to a weapons violation involving a person who had reportedly suffered a self-inflicted wound. The circumstances then changed rapidly, with the subject allegedly firing at officers after police arrived.

Details remain limited, and Sioux Falls authorities have not yet issued a full account of the sequence leading to the exchange of gunfire. According to initial reports from the scene, officers encountered an armed subject and came under fire while responding to the original call.

Subsequently, an officer was gunned down. However, it remains unclear whether the officer was struck by gunfire, suffered another injury during the response or what the officer’s present medical condition is. No official identification has been released for either the officer or the subject involved.

The Sioux Falls Police Department’s public calls-for-service log records a weapons violation call on East 20th Street at approximately 9:51 pm on July 7. The public log, however, does not provide a narrative linking the call to the reported officer-involved shooting, and police have yet to publicly detail the location and circumstances of the developing incident.
