Reform UK Leader Nigel Farage Resigns as MP, Forces Byelection Showdown
Reform UK leader Nigel Farage has resigned as MP for Clacton to force a byelection, framing the move as a stand against the political establishment.
Reform UK leader Nigel Farage has stepped down as the MP for Clacton and will now fight to win the seat back through a byelection, a dramatic move that comes just as he faces a second parliamentary standards investigation over undisclosed gifts.
Farage framed his resignation as a way of proving that voters still want him representing them in parliament. He described the move as a form of defiance against political elites, telling reporters it amounted to “sticking two fingers up at the establishment.”
In a combative public statement, Farage accused unnamed establishment figures of working to block a future Reform government. He also lashed out at the media, describing recent coverage as a “pile-on” and claiming journalists had gone after his family.
Farage was clear about what wasn’t driving his decision. He insisted he wasn’t stepping down to relocate to the United States or return to business, and that he refused to let media scrutiny dictate his political future. Instead, he said he would resign so voters could decide for themselves whether he deserved to keep the seat.
Now there’s a second inquiry. Farage confirmed on Tuesday that he is also being investigated over claims he received financial support from George Cottrell, a crypto gambler, convicted fraudster, and someone The Guardian describes as a close friend of Farage.
Farage’s decision to resign will likely put both inquiries on hold, though they could resume after the byelection if authorities decide that’s the appropriate course. Should Farage ultimately be suspended as a result of either investigation, a second byelection could follow.
He went on to frame the upcoming contest in stark terms. “This will be a people versus the establishment byelection,” Farage said. “It’s a chance to stick two fingers up to the entire establishment to frankly tell them where to go and that is why I will be putting my name forward to stand in this byelection.”

He closed with a direct appeal to voters in his constituency. “I will fight to win. I will fight to continue the political revolution that Reform has started and I would say this to you, the voters of Clacton: If I win, you win,” Farage said.
