PSC dismisses four senior police officers, demotes 10 for ‘misconduct’

The Police Service Commission (PSC) has dismissed four
senior police officers and imposed disciplinary measures on 31 others.

 

In a statement on Tuesday, Torty Njoku Kalu, PSC
spokesperson, said the four senior officers were dismissed after they were
found guilty of “gross misconduct, unprofessional conduct, and acts unbecoming
of public officers”.

Kalu said the decision was reached during the commission’s
plenary meeting in Abuja.

The PSC spokesperson said 10 police officers received
reduction in rank, two were compulsorily retired, three received warning
letters, while seven were exonerated.

“In addition to the dismissals, the commission approved a
range of disciplinary actions which affected multiple officers,” the PSC
spokesperson said.

“Ten senior officers received reductions in rank: three
Superintendents of Police were reduced to Deputy Superintendents of Police, two
Deputy Superintendents of Police to Assistant Superintendents of Police, and
five Assistant Superintendents of Police to Inspectors. Two officers were also
compulsorily retired in the public interest.

“Other sanctions included severe reprimands issued to ten
officers, reprimands to five officers, warning letters to three officers, and a
letter of advice to one officer. In addition, seven officers were exonerated
and cleared of wrongdoing.”

Speaking on the development, Hashimu Salihu Argungu, PSC
chairman, said the commission will not tolerate indiscipline within the rank
and file.

Argungu said the commission will continue to uphold
discipline in the force and ensure that any form of misconduct carries the
appropriate disciplinary actions.
