A chieftain of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) from Borno State, Hon. Muhammad Yahaya, has said a brief interaction with the Action Alliance (AA) presidential candidate for the 2027 election, Aare Adekunle Rufai Omoaje, convinced him that principled leadership is still attainable in Nigeria.

Yahaya stated this in a statement made available to journalists in Kaduna, recalling that the meeting took place on May 9, 2026, during the SDP National Convention in Bauchi.

He said that although political conventions are often associated with speeches, alliances and political negotiations, it was a quiet conversation with Omoaje that left a lasting impression on him.

“There were no cameras, no microphones, no crowd. Just a short conversation. Yet in those few minutes I saw something you rarely encounter in Nigerian politics today—humility, sincerity and quiet wisdom,” he said.

According to him, Omoaje spoke of leadership as a responsibility rather than a reward and envisioned a Nigeria where justice and competence become realities rather than campaign promises.

“He spoke about leadership as a duty, not a reward. He talked about a Nigeria where justice and competence are not just promises politicians make, but realities citizens experience daily,” Yahaya said.

The SDP chieftain added that Omoaje’s humility and willingness to listen distinguished him from many politicians.

“Leadership begins long before an election. It starts with how someone treats people when there is nothing in it for them,” he said.

Yahaya said Nigeria’s challenge was not the absence of talent or resources but the need for leaders whose values matched the demands of public office.

He urged Nigerians to recognise integrity wherever it is found, irrespective of political affiliation.

“Whatever party you belong to, whatever your politics, we should be able to recognise character when we see it. Public life becomes healthier when we are as quick to praise integrity as we are to condemn failure,” he said.

He expressed hope that more leaders with integrity, competence and a commitment to service would emerge, saying his encounter with Omoaje renewed his belief that principled leadership remained possible in Nigeria.
