Osun police recover snatched rifle

Four suspects, Sikiru Ademola Adedeji (21), Olalere Taiwo (21), Olalere Ademola (26) and Bankole Abiodun (20), have been paraded in connection with the attacked on policemen at Ikire, headquarters of Irewole local government of Osun state.

The police had alleged that hoodlums numbering about 30, attacked their rescue team at Naira and Kobo park, Ikire, Monday, snatched police rifle, killed two persons and injured policemen.

The Commissioner of Police, Ibrahim Zungura, who paraded the suspects, Thursday, disclosed that the AK-47 rifle that was snatched by suspected political thugs have been recovered.

According to the CP, preliminary interrogations revealed that the suspects belong to a political thug faction headed by a man named Ayewo.

Investigators established that Ayewo fired the snatched rifle, resulting in casualties.

He said the police have launched a manhunt for Ayewo and other fleeing accomplices, vowing that anyone found culpable will face the full weight of the law.

Speaking to journalists, one of the suspects, Sikiru Ademola Adedeji, explained how the incident unfolded and named “Senator Akogun Lere” as their boss.

He explained that he was collecting union levies at the Naira and Kobo Park in Ikire, while a colleague was doing the same at the nearby Obada Market.

“Ayewo said they should go and bring the boy. Ayewo is our head in the park, and he was brought in by Scorpion and Lanko. They macheted the boy, who then went to report the incident to the police,” Adedeji stated.

He continued: “When the police arrived, they told us not to run. We stayed, and someone snatched a gun from the police. He started shooting; two people died, and some policemen were also hit. Afterward, I was told to ask Ayewo to leave town because ‘Oga’ ordered it.”

Asked who is the Oga that gave the ordered, the suspect reluctantly said

“The only Oga that I know is Senator Akogun Lere.”
