Renaissance Africa Energy Company Limited has announced a major hydrocarbon discovery offshore Nigeria with its JK-004 exploration well, marking the first big win under its refreshed exploration strategy.

NOP NIGERIA reports that the leading African oil and gas E&P company said in a statement on Tuesday that the JK-004 well, drilled in shallow waters of Oil Mining Lease 74 in the Niger Delta, encountered approximately 1,000 feet of hydrocarbon-bearing column.

According to Renaissance, the well cut across seven reservoirs. Initial log interpretation and fluid analysis confirm “excellent reservoir quality and light oil.”

Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, Tony Attah, described the discovery as proof of the company’s technical capability and team commitment.

“The success of JK-004, just over one year after assuming operatorship of these assets demonstrates the strength of our exploration programme,” Attah said.

He credited the milestone to the dedication of Renaissance staff, partners, regulators and contractors working to advance Nigeria’s goal of sustainable long-term liquids production.

Attah also commended the Nigeria Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission for its support, and thanked joint venture partners comprising NNPC Limited, TotalEnergies Limited and Agip Energy and Natural Resources Limited.

He noted that strategic guidance from NNPC Group Chief Executive Officer, Bashir Bayo Ojulari, and EVP Upstream, Udobong Ntia, was critical to delivering value across the JV assets.

Vice President Exploration and Chief Explorer, Dr. Johnbosco Uche, linked the success to “subsurface excellence, technical rigour, and disciplined approach to reserve replacement.”

“The JK-004 well provides a strong foundation for accelerated maturation with clear pathways to early development and value realisation,” Dr. Uche said.

He added that the well’s strategic location near existing fields would enable rapid commercialisation, potentially shortening the timeline from discovery to first oil.

The announcement has drawn strong reactions from regulators and industry leaders.

Commission Chief Executive of NUPRC, Oritsemeyiwa Eyesan, called the discovery “a perfect alignment” with the Commission’s vision to grow national reserves “to future-proof sustainable national growth.”

Eyesan pledged that NUPRC will continue building the enabling regulatory environment needed to support investment in Nigeria’s oil and gas sector.

Renowned explorationist and Renaissance Board Chairman, Dr. Layi Fatona, said the find underscores the enduring prospectivity of Nigeria’s basins.

Fatona noted that “indigenous operators play a critical role in unlocking value, driving investment, and contributing meaningfully to national energy security and economic growth.”

NNPC’s EVP Upstream, Udobong Ntia, also congratulated the Renaissance JV team for safe execution and for supporting NNPC’s sustainable growth ambition.

Ntia said the Ojulari-led NNPC will intensify support for reserve replacement efforts, citing JK-004 as a demonstration of what is possible with strong JV collaboration.

The discovery comes as Renaissance cements its position as Africa’s biggest oil and gas company, according to a recent Wood Mackenzie ranking.

Renaissance currently operates Nigeria’s largest upstream joint venture, with 18 Oil Mining Leases, two export terminals and one floating production, storage, and offloading vessel in shallow waters offshore the Niger Delta.

Industry analysts say JK-004 could help boost Nigeria’s crude output and reserves at a time when the country is pushing to attract new investment and reverse production declines.

With appraisal and development planning now expected to accelerate, Renaissance says it will work with partners and regulators to move the OML 74 discovery into production as quickly as possible.
