One dead, seven injured as section of Gombe assembly complex collapses

One person has died, and seven others sustained injuries
following the collapse of a section of the new Gombe state house of assembly
complex.

 

The Gombe state government said the incident occurred on
Friday when a section of the cantilevered entrance canopy being constructed
gave way at the project site.

The new Gombe state house of assembly complex is one of the
major public infrastructure projects being executed by the administration of
Inuwa Yahaya.

The state government said it has commenced an investigation
to determine the cause of the collapse and prevent a recurrence.

In a statement signed by Danladi Adamu, permanent secretary
of the ministry of works, housing and transportation, the government said eight
workers were involved in the incident.

The statement said seven injured workers were immediately
evacuated for medical attention, while one person died.

The government added that five of the injured are receiving
treatment at the Gombe State Specialist Hospital, while two others are being
treated at the Federal Teaching Hospital (FTH), Gombe.

The statement said Yahaya had been briefed on the incident
and expressed condolences to the family of the deceased.

The governor also directed that all injured workers receive
comprehensive medical treatment at the government’s expense.

He ordered the ministry of works, housing and
transportation, alongside relevant emergency, regulatory and technical
agencies, to immediately commence established safety and accountability
procedures.

The government said the contractor and project consultant
have been directed to submit a formal incident report within 24 hours.

It added that the report would be followed by a preliminary
investigation report and a comprehensive technical report containing findings
and recommendations.

‘FACTS WILL GUIDE GOVERNMENT’S ACTIONS’

The government said decisions on the incident would be
guided by the outcome of the investigation.

“As the investigation is underway, the Government will allow
the established facts to guide all necessary decisions and actions,” the
statement reads.

“Appropriate measures will be taken in line with the outcome
of the investigation and applicable standards.”

The state government reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring
strict compliance with safety, quality and engineering standards in the
execution of public infrastructure projects.
