An emotional scene played out at the Delta State Government House in Asaba on Monday as newly appointed Commissioner, Moses Ogodo, broke down in tears and attempted to kneel before Governor Sheriff Oborevwori shortly after taking the oath of office.

The governor immediately stopped the gesture, asking the visibly overwhelmed commissioner to stand and reminding him that their collective responsibility was to serve the people of Delta State.

The brief but touching moment occurred during Ogodo’s inauguration into the State Executive Council, when the new commissioner, overcome with emotion, moved towards the governor to express gratitude for the appointment.

Interrupting the gesture, Oborevwori said:

“Don’t kneel down for me. Stand up. We are here to serve Deltans together.”

His remarks drew applause from members of the State Executive Council, political leaders and other guests who attended the swearing-in ceremony.

The Governor’s Senior Special Assistant on Media, Ossai Ovie Success, who shared details of the event on Tuesday, described the incident as a heartfelt demonstration of gratitude and a reflection of the governor’s leadership style.

According to him, Ogodo became emotional immediately after taking the oath of office and sought to appreciate the governor by kneeling before him.

However, Oborevwori declined the gesture, stressing that public service should be driven by humility, teamwork and commitment to the people rather than personal loyalty.

Ossai added that the governor’s response reflected the ideals of the administration’s M.O.R.E Agenda, which promotes inclusive governance, respect and people-centred leadership.

A video from the ceremony showed the commissioner wiping away tears before approaching the governor, who gestured for him to rise. The two later exchanged a handshake as the audience applauded the governor’s response.

The emotional exchange has since attracted widespread attention, with many describing it as one of the most memorable moments of the inauguration ceremony and a reflection of the governor’s message that leadership is rooted in service.
