Nolan Wells Cause of Death: What Investigators Have Revealed About Mississippi Teen's Mysterious Death
The death of 18-year-old college football player Nolan Xavier Wells has raised numerous questions, with authorities yet to determine the cause of death.
The death of 18-year-old Mississippi college football player Nolan Xavier Wells continues to raise questions, but officials have not yet determined or released his cause of death. Authorities say the investigation remains active, and the final autopsy and toxicology results are still pending.
Wells disappeared on July 4 after travelling with friends to Horn Island, a barrier island off the Mississippi Gulf Coast. His body was found two days later in the water near the island’s northwestern shoreline following an extensive search involving local authorities, the US Coast Guard and volunteer rescue teams.
Is Nolan Wells’ cause of death known?
No. The official cause and manner of death have not been released. While investigators have indicated that drowning is suspected, they have not confirmed it as the cause of death and are awaiting the medical examiner’s findings, including toxicology results.
Why is the investigation attracting national attention?
The case has drawn widespread attention because of unanswered questions surrounding Wells’ final hours.
His family, represented by civil rights attorney Ben Crump, disputes the suggestion that Wells was accidentally left behind on the island and is seeking an independent autopsy. They have also questioned inconsistencies in witness accounts and cellphone evidence, including the fact that Wells’ phone and keys were reportedly found with friends after his disappearance.
Authorities have said they have not found evidence of foul play so far, but stress that the investigation remains ongoing and that conclusions could change if new evidence emerges. Investigators have appealed for photos, videos and eyewitness accounts from people who were on Horn Island that day.
Independent autopsy underway
Wells’ family has commissioned an independent autopsy as they continue to seek answers about his death. Civil rights advocates, including former NFL quarterback Colin Kaepernick, have also supported efforts to fund the additional forensic examination.
Until the medical examiner completes the investigation, Nolan Wells’ official cause of death remains undetermined.
