Nigeria wins 5 silver, 1 bronze in 2026 Pan African Maths Olympiads

Nigeria has won five silver medals and one bronze at the 2026 edition of Pan African Mathematics Olympiad, PAMO held in Yamossoukro, Cote D’Ivoire.

According to a statement by the Controller, Information & Public Relations, National Mathematics Centre, Mr Onyekachi Njoku, the silver medalists were Aghaduno Chimfimnanya who won two silver medals, one in PAMO and another in PAMO-G.

Oyerinde Damaris also won two silver medals, one in PAMO and another in PAMO-G.

Other winners were Lius Liu, who won one silver in PAMO and Enwere Kingsley Ikenna, who clinched one bronze in PAMO.

The students emerged to represent the country through a fair and transparent process of the National Mathematical Centre conducted by  Nigerian National Mathematical Sciences Olympiad.

The Pan African Mathematics Olympiad (PAMO) is Africa’s flagship Mathematics Championship for Secondary school students in the continent. It is held annually on a rotational basis among African countries.

The competition is organised under the auspices of African Mathematics Union (AMU) through its Commission on Pan African Mathematics Olympiad, AMUPAMOC.

PAMO grants all African countries the leverage to gather under one umbrella for promising young African Mathematicians to compete and celebrate excellence and intellectual breakthrough in Africa.

Each country sends a team of six student Mathematics competitors and the best student female contestant in the competition is crowned the African Mathematics Queens.

Nigeria also won Bronze medal at the Pan African Mathematics Olympiad for Girls, PAMO-G which is exclusively for ranking female contestants in Pan African Mathematics Olympiad based on the same papers and marking scheme.

The Acting Director/Chief Executive of the National Mathematical Centre, Prof Benjamin Oyelami who doubled as the Team Leader of the Nigerian contingent to the competition was full of admiration and praises for the encouragement through funding by the federal government which enabled the Centre to prepare and present the students for the competition.

He pledged the readiness and preparedness of the Centre to continue to play its pivotal role not only in adequately preparing and presenting students for the competition but in ensuring that they win more laurels for the country.

Oyelami stressed that the centre had been repositioned for effective teaching, learning and research in Mathematics and Mathematical Sciences in an effort to ensure students perform well in these subjects at all levels of Nigerian education system.
