Meghan McCain Reveals Major Regret Amid Mitch McConnell Health Concerns
Meghan McCain revealed she regrets not urging her father, the late Sen. John McCain, to resign immediately after his 2017 brain cancer diagnosis, a confession that came amid backlash over her comments on Sen. Mitch McConnell’s continued absence from public life.
Meghan McCain opened up about a deeply personal regret this week, revealing she wishes her father had stepped down from the Senate immediately after his brain cancer diagnosis. The admission came as part of a larger back and forth tied to the ongoing mystery surrounding Sen. Mitch McConnell’s health and whereabouts.
The former co-host of The View shared the reflection on Thursday after facing backlash for an earlier post that appeared to poke fun at McConnell’s absence from public life following a medical emergency. In her follow up post, McCain admitted to carrying regret nearly a decade after her father, former Arizona Senator John McCain, passed away.
“I also have a lot of regrets, almost a decade since my dad’s passing,” she wrote.
She went further, saying her family should have pushed her father to leave office the moment doctors diagnosed him with brain cancer in 2017. “My family should have forced him to step down the second he was diagnosed,” McCain posted. “Which is why I’m now an advocate for age and term limits in politics. I also sincerely hope Senator McConnell is OK.”
Holmes didn’t hold back in his pushback. “You know, I don’t remember anyone from the McConnell family making fun of your dad when he was absent from the Senate for the final 8 months of his life in a two-seat majority,” he wrote.
For context, John McCain continued serving in the Senate for 13 months following his glioblastoma diagnosis, remaining active in his role until his death on August 25, 2018.
“In all seriousness, Senator McConnell’s staff owes it to the American public to give a real update on his health or show us some kind of proof of life. All of this is unseemly, macabre, bad for democracy, and quite frankly embarrassing for the country,” she wrote.
As the days have passed without an update, public pressure has grown for proof that McConnell remains alive and capable of carrying out his Senate duties.
