Border Collie Helped Locate Survivors

Working alongside his handler, Jorge Beens, Tsunami was part of the K-SAR ECID search-and-rescue canine unit deployed to the disaster zone.

Using his highly trained sense of smell, the rescue dog located at least 13 survivors trapped beneath collapsed buildings, allowing emergency crews to pinpoint their locations and pull them to safety.

Among those rescued was a 60-year-old man who had survived nearly six days beneath the rubble before Tsunami helped rescuers find him.

Officials praised the canine’s remarkable contribution, describing him as one of the standout members of the emergency response.

A Veteran of International Rescue Missions

Tsunami is no stranger to disaster zones.

Before the Venezuela earthquake, the Border Collie participated in rescue operations following the devastating earthquakes in Turkey and Syria and also assisted during floods and landslides in Venezuela.

Final Mission Before Retirement

According to the K-SAR ECID rescue team, the Venezuela earthquake response marks Tsunami’s final deployment before retirement.

“He retires at the top of his game, proving his courage and giving everything in the field,” the organisation said in a statement.

The announcement has prompted an outpouring of appreciation online, with many hailing the Border Collie as a symbol of hope and resilience amid tragedy.

Venezuelan National Assembly President Jorge Rodríguez said 137 search-and-rescue dogs participated in operations during the 10-day rescue effort.
