Kaduna: BEPU seeks probe as many d!e in Birnin Gwari illegal miners’ clash

The Birnin Gwari Emirate Progressives Union (BEPU) has called for a thorough investigation into the reported deadly clash involving suspected illegal miners in Randagi community, Birnin Gwari Local Government Area (LGA) of Kaduna state.

The call followed reports that several persons were feared killed during the violence, although the exact casualty figure had yet to be officially confirmed as of the time of filing this report.

BBC Hausa had reported that many people lost their lives in the incident, which reportedly involved suspected illegal miners.

In a statement signed by its Chairman, Dr Isah Muhammad, BEPU expressed condolences to the people of Randagi and families of the victims, while praying for the speedy recovery of those injured.

The union urged security agencies to unravel the circumstances surrounding the incident and ensure that anyone found culpable is brought to justice.

“BEPU calls on the relevant authorities to carry out a prompt, thorough and transparent investigation into the incident. The circumstances surrounding this tragedy must be fully established, and anyone found responsible should be dealt with in accordance with the law,” the statement said.

The group also urged the Federal Government, Kaduna state government and mining regulatory agencies to strengthen oversight of mining activities in Birnin Gwari, stressing that while mining remains an important economic activity, it must be conducted in line with legal, environmental and safety standards.

According to the union, residents have repeatedly complained about the destruction of farmlands and public infrastructure, as well as the alleged use of hazardous chemicals near water sources during mineral processing.

It warned that such practices could pose serious risks to public health, agriculture and the environment if left unchecked.

BEPU further lamented that host communities had continued to derive little benefit from the mineral resources extracted from the area, calling on relevant authorities to ensure that mining activities translate into improved infrastructure, healthcare, education, potable water and employment opportunities for residents.

The union appealed to residents of Randagi and other communities in the emirate to remain calm and cooperate with security agencies investigating the incident, while reaffirming its commitment to promoting peace, responsible mining and sustainable development in Birnin Gwari.
