An unprecedentedly hot and dry summer across Western Europe has sparked severe forest fires that crews in Spain have been fighting since last week, while firefighters on Monday also combated massive wildfires advancing toward Bordeaux, France.

Starting last week near the Atlantic coast, the fires in France have closed to within just 9.3 miles of the outer boundaries of the Bordeaux metropolitan area.

According to updates from officials over the weekend, approximately 220,000 residents have been displaced by evacuations in France. Meanwhile, in nearby Spain, authorities have ordered over 75,000 citizens to evacuate their properties and instructed another 30,000 to remain sheltered in place.

“This is a fire of a size never seen before,” Jerome Steffe, mayor of Cestas, said on Monday.

According to Environment Minister Sara Aagesen, the central provinces of Madrid, Avila, and Toledo in Spain have been impacted by wildfires, with flames destroying over 123,500 acres of countryside in Avila alone, making it the largest wildfire in the country’s recent history. Regional authorities reported that an additional blaze has consumed more than 16,000 acres in the eastern Castellon province.

On Monday, Finance Minister Roland Lescure stated that the local economy has experienced a severe shock from the wildfires surrounding Bordeaux in southwestern France. This region is a major tourism hub and one of the primary centers of French wine production.

“It’s like a clap of thunder for an area which could have done without this,” Lescure told reporters..

Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez announced that his government will declare a civil protection emergency on Tuesday to secure additional recovery funding.

In both Bordeaux and Avila, July high temperatures have averaged 90 degrees Fahrenheit, significantly above the month’s normal high between 1961 and 1990, according to the Reuters Climate Monitor.

The European wildfires this summer are testing the limits of available firefighting resources and prompting discussions on the best response methods.

As part of the European Union’s civil protection mechanism, international support has been mobilized: Italy and Greece have each provided two Canadair water-bombing planes to assist Spain, and Portugal has contributed equipment alongside upwards of 100 military personnel.

“It’s a race against time before the heatwave returns,” said Steffe, the mayor of Cestas.
