I Was In Prison For 10 Years For Armed Robbery Case, I Know The Nitty-Gritty Of Everything -Williams

According to a report by Channels Television, Bishop Kayode Williams, a cleric and prison affairs analyst has called for a major overhaul of Nigeria’s correctional system, stressing that correctional centres must be upgraded to meet modern standards and better safeguard the rights of inmates.

Williams made the remarks during an interview on Channels Television while speaking on the challenges facing correctional facilities and the need for reforms that prioritize rehabilitation and human dignity.

The prison reform advocate said Nigeria must move beyond merely changing the name of prisons to correctional centres and ensure that the system reflects the practices adopted in more advanced countries. He argued that true correction involves equipping inmates with the skills, education and support needed to become responsible members of society after serving their sentences.

Drawing from his personal experience, Williams said he understands the realities of life behind bars and the shortcomings of the existing system. According to him, this experience has shaped his commitment to advocating for reforms that will make correctional institutions more effective.

“I was sentenced too. I was in the prison for 10 years for an armed robbery case. So I know the nitty-gritty of everything going on in the correctional institute and that is why I’m saying there can be a model. We have to change. We are alrwsy now on correctional institute, but are we following it up with advanced countries,” he said…....
