Dr. Joseph Gowon, a retired Nigerian soldier and veteran of the Civil War, has stated that during the war he refused an order to kill captured Biafran soldiers

In an interview with The Yellow Mic Podcast, Gowon said the battalion he served in captured 18 Biafran soldiers in Nsukka. He stated that his commander ordered him to execute them, but he refused to carry out the instruction.

Gowon said another soldier was then ordered to kill the captured Biafran soldiers. He stated that after they were killed, he was forced to bury 18 of them and he did it in less than 30 minutes.

In Gowon’s words: “We had already captured some Biafran soldiers. I was having MG-1 machine gun, I was asked to killed them and I told my commander no. They ordered another soldier who was an illiterate, he killed them and my punishment was to bury them. I buried all 18 of them in less than 30 minutes…....
