Huge manhunt as Berlin police name suspect after deadly car ramming at pride festival
German authorities have issued an arrest warrant for a suspect they believe is connected to the vehicle attack near Berlin’s Pride celebration.
Berlin police have identified the suspect as Abdul B., a 21-year-old man with a “slim build” and black hair. He is wearing a black hoodie and white trousers, they say.
He is accused of injuring multiple people in the Tiergarten district and remains at large, according to an official statement. “One or more people are believed to have subsequently fled the vehicle,” police said. “Furthermore, several people are reported to have been injured with stabbing weapons,” authorities added.
Berlin descended into chaos on Saturday evening after a vehicle plowed into crowds attending the city’s annual Christopher Street Day Pride festivities in Tiergarten Park.
Police confirmed one person was killed and at least 16 others were wounded in the incident, with three victims in life-threatening condition.
Eyewitnesses reported a white minivan-style vehicle was traveling at high speed before striking pedestrians. The vehicle sustained such severe damage that police said determining its exact make and model proved difficult.
A massive manhunt is currently underway after the driver escaped the scene. More than 2,200 police officers have been mobilized throughout Berlin as investigators pursue their search.
Authorities have stated the suspect is known to law enforcement and has connections to the Islamist scene in Berlin. Investigators continue working to determine a motive and have urged witnesses and anyone with video footage of the attack to step forward.
The incident led organizers to call off the remaining Berlin Pride festivities, with thousands of participants evacuated from the vicinity. Police have cautioned that the casualty count could still increase as multiple injured individuals remain in critical condition.
