Heavy Rain, Flooding Leave 82 Dead Across India, Pakistan And Afghanistan

At least 82 people have died after heavy rain triggered flooding across northeastern India, Pakistan and Afghanistan this week, according to authorities. Floodwaters damaged farmland, roads, bridges and public facilities, while emergency teams continued rescue and relief operations.

In India’s northeastern state of Assam, at least 10 people died in the past 24 hours, bringing the week’s death toll to 36. Officials described the flooding as unprecedented, with more than 650,000 people affected across 11 districts. Authorities said exceptionally heavy rainfall in neighbouring Nagaland between 18 and 20 July caused rivers, including the Brahmaputra, to swell rapidly.

Across Afghanistan’s Nuristan province and Pakistan’s Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, authorities reported at least 46 deaths and more than 100 injuries over the past 72 hours. Rescue teams continued searching for survivors after floodwaters swept away homes and other buildings.

Experts say Afghanistan and Pakistan remain among the countries most vulnerable to the effects of climate change, despite contributing relatively little to global greenhouse gas emissions. They warn that stronger adaptation measures and disaster preparedness could help reduce future losses as extreme weather events become more frequent.
