GOC commissions 55 signals brigade headquarters, charges commanders on lasting legacies

The General Officer Commanding (GOC), 81 Division Nigerian Army, Major General Adebayo Abdulrahman Babalola, has commissioned the newly remodeled and fully furnished Headquarters of 55 Signals Brigade in Victoria Island, Lagos, urging commanders across the Nigerian Army to embark on projects that will leave enduring legacies while strengthening operational efficiency.

Speaking at the event on Friday, the GOC described the upgraded complex as a reflection of the Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu’s  “Soldier First” philosophy, which prioritises the welfare of personnel through improved infrastructure and a conducive working environment.

The project includes a remodeled Brigade Commander’s Office, a modern Orderly Room and upgraded administrative facilities designed to enhance professionalism, productivity and operational readiness.

Major General Babalola commended the Commander, 55 Signals Brigade, Brigadier General CO Iyere, for his foresight and commitment in transforming the Brigade Headquarters into a befitting administrative complex. He urged military commanders to identify and execute impactful projects capable of improving their formations, stressing that leadership is best measured by the enduring legacies it leaves behind.

He also charged officers and soldiers to protect and maintain the newly commissioned facilities, noting that sustainable infrastructure depends on a strong maintenance culture.

Also speaking, former Commander Corps of Signals, Major General NC Ugbo (rtd), described the project as a symbol of visionary leadership and institutional development, while the Commander Corps of Engineers, Major General ST Shafaru, called on commanders to continue investing in infrastructure that promotes personnel welfare and operational effectiveness.

The Flag Officer Commanding Western Naval Command, Rear Admiral AA Mustapha, also praised the initiative, saying such projects strengthen professionalism and improve the working environment within the Armed Forces.

Representing Chevron Nigeria Limited and other Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) partners, Mr. Emmanuel Oko-Oboh said the project symbolised visionary leadership and operational excellence, noting that the upgraded headquarters would further enhance the Brigade’s critical communication support role within the Nigerian Army.

Earlier, Brigadier General Iyere disclosed that the vision for transforming the Brigade Headquarters originated more than two decades ago when he served in the office as a young lieutenant. He thanked God for the opportunity to actualise the dream and expressed gratitude to the GOC, officers, soldiers, civilian staff and corporate partners whose support ensured the successful completion of the project.
