France vs Morocco Chaos: Cop Injured in London, Police Vehicle Attacked in Paris | WATCH VIDEOS
Authorities had anticipated potential unrest, deploying over 20,000 officers across France. Despite worries, many areas in Paris enjoyed festive gatherings, with fans celebrating and chanting for star player Kylian Mbappé.
Police responded to disorder in London and Paris on Friday night after France defeated Morocco 2-0 to reach the FIFA World Cup semi-finals. In Paris, a Municipal Police vehicle was reportedly targeted by supporters near Les Halles during post-match celebrations, while in west London a Metropolitan Police officer was injured as officers confronted crowds on Edgware Road. Separate reports also said people were injured during disturbances in The Hague, the Netherlands, following the match.
The Metropolitan Police said an officer was injured during the disorder.
The incidents came after France’s victory over Morocco, which secured Les Bleus a place in the semi-finals.
Authorities had been preparing for possible unrest following the match. In France, more than 20,000 police officers were deployed nationwide, including 8,000 in Paris, after security officials warned that disturbances could occur regardless of the result.
A French security memo had warned that fireworks could be used during any disorder, similar to the violence that followed Paris Saint-Germain’s championship celebrations in May.
Despite those concerns, large parts of Paris saw jubilant celebrations rather than widespread unrest. Thousands of supporters gathered in the capital, where some districts had been pedestrianised to accommodate fans.
The streets were filled with France supporters celebrating the victory, with chants of “Kyky I love you!” directed at Kylian Mbappé.
Mbappé recovered after missing an early penalty to score France’s opening goal, before Ousmane Dembélé added a second to seal a 2-0 victory and book a semi-final against either Spain or Belgium.
Morocco supporters also gathered in large numbers, including at Boston’s Gillette Stadium, where the North African side were missing injured forward Ismael Saibari.
Separate reports said people were injured during disturbances in The Hague, the Netherlands, following the match.
The circumstances surrounding the incidents in London and The Hague remain under investigation.
