Foundation takes mosquito nets, raincoats to Makoko community
The My People First Foundation has brought relief to residents of Lagos’ Makoko riverine community with the distribution of hundreds of mosquito nets and raincoats to protect vulnerable households and support residents whose daily lives and livelihoods depend on the waterways.
The humanitarian intervention followed an assessment of the living conditions in the community, where residents contend with mosquito exposure and the challenges of navigating the waterways to conduct their businesses, fish and transport goods and passengers, particularly during the rainy season.
Makoko, a predominantly water-based settlement, is home to diverse groups, including members of the Egun community, citizens of the Republic of Benin and other residents who depend largely on fishing, trading and water transportation for their livelihoods.
In a statement issued by the founder of the organization, Hajiya Aishat Oyiza Omade, said the intervention was designed to provide practical assistance to residents facing the daily challenges associated with life in the riverine community.
She commended the residents for their resilience, hard work and entrepreneurial spirit, noting that their determination to sustain their businesses and families despite difficult living conditions deserved recognition and support.
Omade assured the community that the foundation would return to Makoko in the near future to assess additional needs and extend further assistance where necessary.
She reaffirmed the organisation’s commitment to reaching underserved and hard-to-reach communities across Nigeria through humanitarian initiatives that address practical needs and improve people’s well-being.
Receiving the items on behalf of the community, the Baale of Makoko, Baba Jeje, expressed gratitude to the foundation for bringing its intervention directly to the residents.
He observed that it was uncommon for organisations to navigate the waterways into the heart of Makoko to identify and address the challenges confronting the people.
The traditional ruler praised Omade and her team for their compassion and commitment to humanitarian service, praying for God’s continued strength and blessings upon them as they extend assistance to vulnerable communities across the country.
The intervention forms part of the My People First Foundation’s broader humanitarian programme focused on serving humanity, empowering communities and saving lives, with particular attention to vulnerable populations and underserved settlements that often receive limited support.
