Ten leading Nigerian companies have been included in the FTSE Frontier Index Series as Nigeria prepares to regain its Frontier Market status after a three-year absence from the global index classification.
FTSE Russell disclosed this in its September 2026 index review, confirming that Nigeria will be reclassified from Unclassified to Frontier Market status from the opening of trading on September 21, 2026.
The Nigerian companies added to the index are Aradel Holdings, Dangote Cement, First HoldCo, Guaranty Trust Holding Company (GTCO), MTN Nigeria Communications, Nestlé Nigeria, Nigerian Breweries, Presco, Stanbic IBTC Holdings and Zenith Bank.
The FTSE Frontier Index Series provides benchmarks covering large-, mid- and small-cap companies across eligible frontier markets. The indices are designed to serve as performance benchmarks for investors and as a basis for index-tracking investment products.
The indices can also be segmented by company size, region, country and industry sector, with calculations available on both price and total-return bases.
Nigeria’s return to the index follows a lengthy process aimed at addressing concerns over market accessibility and the ability of international investors to move capital in and out of the country.
