The federal and state governments have called for stronger mortgage financing, improved land administration and institutional collaboration to accelerate delivery of affordable housing across Nigeria.

A press statement by the director of Press and Public Relations of the ministry, Badamasi Haiba, Monday said the call was made at the 15th meeting of the National Council on Land, Housing and Urban Development (NCLHUD), holding in Sokoto from October 12 to 16, 2026.

The meeting, themed: “Strengthening Mortgage, Land and Institutional Systems for Accelerated and Inclusive Housing Delivery,” brought together stakeholders from federal and state governments, professional associations and regulatory bodies in the housing sector.

The statement said the director of Planning, Research and Statistics of the ministry, Mukhtar Iliyasu Umar,  while speaking at the event said the council provided an important platform for stakeholders to examine challenges in the housing sector and develop practical solutions to improve housing delivery nationwide.

It quoted Umar as  saying that the meeting adopted a three-stage deliberation process for considering, harmonising and adopting policy recommendations to address critical challenges in housing and urban development.

It said Umar noted that the quality of the council’s final decisions would depend on thorough technical analysis, sound recommendations and effective harmonisation.

Similarly, the statement also said Sokoto state Commissioner for Lands, Housing, Survey and Country Planning, Nasiru Aliyu during his opening remarks said the theme was designed to promote housing policies that would guarantee access to decent and affordable homes for Nigerians.
