FCT: Dei Dei scrap market traders beg Wike to intervene over ‘illegal demotion of toilets’

It is a daily struggle for traders and customers at section C of Dei Dei scrap market.

With no toilet facility available, as a result of illegal demolition of the existing ones, many are forced to seek alternatives outside the market premises.

The problem, according to the market chairman, Chief Kenneth Okoye, started when the only toilet in the section was demolished by a trader who is now building six shops on the site.

Addressing journalists in his office on Tuesday, Okoye said the situation has become embarrassing and uncomfortable for the thousands of people who patronise the market daily.

“Our people deserve dignity. A major market in Abuja cannot function without toilets. Women, the elderly and customers are the most affected,” he lamented.

The chairman warned of possible health consequences if the situation persists.

He cited risks of cholera and other infections due to poor sanitation, calling it a time bomb for the market community.

He appealed to the FCT Minister, Barr. Nyesom Wike, to use his “Mr. Projects” reputation to restore the demolished toilet and provide additional facilities for the growing market population.

Okoye praised the minister for transforming the FCT, saying traders at Dei are solidly behind the administration.

“Only those who refuse to see will deny that work is ongoing in Abuja,” he said.

He urged the FCT Administration to act urgently, stressing that restoring the toilets will not only improve hygiene but also show that the government cares about the welfare of ordinary traders.
