Ex-adult film star sworn in as senator in Colombia
Deyci Alejandra Omaña Ortiz, a former adult film star better known as Amaranta Hank, has been sworn in as a senator in Colombia.
According to La Opinion, the 33-year-old took the oath of office on Monday in Bogotá as a member of the left-wing Historic Pact coalition, the political party of outgoing Colombian president Gustavo Petro.
Ortiz, who previously worked as a journalist, entered the adult entertainment industry in 2017 and retired two years later before venturing into politics.
She was elected in March from the Norte de Santander region after placing 23rd on Historic Pact’s list of candidates, with the coalition securing enough seats to send her to the senate.
Speaking after her election, Ortiz said she felt supported by the people who voted for her.
“I feel embraced by my people,” she said.
The former adult film star said one of her priorities in the senate is securing legal protections and social security benefits for people working in the adult-content industry.
According to Ortiz, adult-content creators deserve labour rights and safeguards against exploitation by companies and agencies operating in the sector.
Beyond advocating for the adult entertainment industry, she also pledged to push for improved mental health services and stronger measures to prevent sexual abuse.
“There is a political transformation underway that still has a long way to go, but the important thing is that it has already begun in some way,” she said.
