Electricity: Tinubu Finally Adopted My Power Sector Blueprint — Atiku

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and 2027 presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) has claimed that President Bola Tinubu has now adopted his two-decade-old blueprint for resolving Nigeria’s electricity crisis.  

 In a statement issued on Sunday by his spokesperson, Phrank Shaibu, Atiku said the Tinubu administration’s recent policy shift aligns with the decentralised power generation model he advocated over 20 years ago.

Atiku referenced the admission by Minister of Power, Joseph Tegbe, that Nigeria can no longer rely solely on large centralised power plants as validation of his long-standing position.

“It should not take a government three years in office to discover what was obvious more than two decades ago,” Atiku said.

 He criticised the administration for raising electricity tariffs before implementing necessary reforms, arguing that a thoughtful government would have fixed the system first.

Atiku recalled consistently advising former President Olusegun Obasanjo during his time as Vice President to decentralise electricity generation by leveraging Nigeria’s diverse energy sources, including hydro, solar, gas, and others. “This has been my position for over two decades,” he added.
