Edo::18 council chairmen, 192 councillors get certificates of return
The Edo State Independent Electoral Commission (EDSIEC) Monday presented Certificates of Return to the 18 newly elected local government chairmen and 192 councillors.
It charged them to justify the confidence reposed in them by the electorate through exemplary leadership and commitment to grassroots development.
Speaking during the ceremony in Benin City, EDSIEC chairman, Hon. Jonathan Aifuobhokhan, congratulated the elected officials and urged them to uphold democratic principles, govern with integrity and place the welfare of the people above personal interests.
He also commended the Edo state government, security agencies, political parties, election observers, civil society organisations, traditional and religious leaders, the media, election personnel and residents of the state for their roles in ensuring a peaceful and credible electoral process.
”As you assume office, may your tenure be guided by wisdom, integrity and accountability, with a genuine commitment to the development of your respective communities,” Aifuobhokhan said. He declared that the presentation of Certificates of Return was officially concluded.
Responding on behalf of the newly elected chairmen, the chairman of Oredo local government council, Gabriel Iduseri, described the election as free, fair and transparent.
He commended EDSIEC for what he called an elaborate voter sensitisation campaign that contributed to the impressive turnout recorded during the poll.
Iduseri pledged that the council chairmen would align with Governor Monday Okpebholo’s SHINE Agenda and work to deliver the dividends of democracy at the grassroots.
