The KilaGate scandal has gotten messier.
Beyond faking his professorship, Anthony Kila, the now-suspended Pro-Chancellor of Michael and Cecilia Ibru University, MCIU, also falsified every academic record he claimed, a fresh investigation by PREMIUM TIMES has revealed.
NOP NIGERIA reports that the investigation, which is the second part of a five-month investigation, has stunned Nigerians who regularly watch Kila on television, listen to him on radio and read his newspaper columns pontificating about honesty, transparency and corruption in government.
Many had wondered how he wore the fake professorial rank for more than a decade without suspicion. Others wondered why he did not stick to Dr title, given the PhD they believed he had.
The new report says even that PhD, and every other degree, was made up.
According to the investigation, Kila claimed a Bachelor of Arts in Classic Studies from Università per Stranieri, Italy in 1989, a Master of Arts in European Studies from the same institution in 1991, a Postgraduate Diploma in Media and Communication from University of Essex in 1992, and an MSc in International Banking and Finance from City University London in 1994.

He also claimed a PhD in Political Economy from University of Perugia in 1997, an MBA from Aston University Birmingham in 2002, a Postgraduate Certificate in Higher Education, PGCE, from Cambridge in 2006, and a Master of Laws, LLM, from Cambridge in 2009.
PREMIUM TIMES says all of them were false.
The paper said it wrote to all the universities. While some disowned him outright, others said they never offered the programmes he claimed.

Aston University told the newspaper: “There is no record in Aston University’s student registry of an Anthony Kila studying for an MBA.”
City St George’s, University of London said Kila enrolled for a one-year Banking and International Finance programme on September 18, 2000, but was deregistered on June 30, 2001 without completing it. He had claimed he finished the MSc in 1994.
University of Essex said it does not offer a PGD in Media and Communication and has never offered it.

The University of Perugia said its Economics Department does not award doctoral degrees in Political Economy. Its PhD is in Economics – Institutions, Business and Quantitative Methods.
The report also found that Università per Stranieri Perugia only started offering Bachelor’s degrees in 1992 and postgraduate degrees after 1999 following the Bologna Process. Kila claimed he got BA in 1989 and MA in 1991, when the university only offered non-degree courses in Italian literature, art and music.
The Siena campus of Università per Stranieri also confirmed it never offered Classic Studies or European Studies. It offers Italian Language and Culture, Linguistic and Cultural Mediation, and related courses.

On Cambridge, PREMIUM TIMES said Cambridge requires at least a first-class law degree for LLM, which Kila never claimed to have, and does not run a PGCE in Higher Education. The closest programme, Postgraduate Certificate in Teaching & Learning in Higher Education, is open only to Cambridge staff with three years teaching experience and started only in 2017, yet Kila claimed he got it in 2006.
The fake professorship was first exposed five months ago. Kila had told PREMIUM TIMES that the European Centre for Advanced and Professional Studies, ECAPS, made him a professor and Jean Monnet Professor of Strategy and Development in 2016. The investigation found ECAPS does not exist and the European Education and Culture Executive Agency, EACEA, which administers Jean Monnet, disowned him.

Days after that expose, MCIU suspended him as Pro-Chancellor, a role he assumed in August 2025, and removed his profile from its website.
When confronted with the fresh findings this week, Kila responded via email: “I am currently putting together my academic and professional documents, and they will be ready soon. I started contacting the institutions I am associated with on Monday, and these documents cannot be ready by Thursday.”
