Corsair Sea Drones Explained: The US Navy's Uncrewed Weapon Used For The 1st Time In Iran War

Tensions between the US and Iran have intensified following mutual strikes, marking the first use of Corsair unmanned surface vessels by the US against Iranian targets.

Tehran:Tensions between the United States and Iran escalated after renewed strikes by both sides. For the first time, the US used Corsair unmanned surface vessels (USVs) for an attack on Iran. US Central Command has also published a video of three Corsair USVs striking an Iranian ship maintenance facility and submarine at Bandar Abbas Naval Base.

On Monday, the US Central Command (CENTCOM) claimed to have struck Iranian military air-defense systems, coastal radar sites, missile and drone capabilities, and even small boats using fighter jets and one-way attack aerial drones.

According to reports, these one-way drones are modelled on Iran’s Shahed drones. The Donald Trump administration had also said that it would invest billions of dollars on the project.

These drones operate in three ways – remotely controlles, semi-autonomius and automous. Paths of these drones are based on real-time navigation using morern cameras, radars, and infrared sensors.

These drones, built by Texas-based defence company Saronic Technologies. are capable of travelling at speeds of up to 35 knots. These can carry payloads even over 450 kg. Corsair drones are built for logistics, surveillance, and even for attack.

CENTCOM said precision-guided munitions were employed against Iranian coastal defence systems, missile launch infrastructure, drone sites and maritime capabilities.
