COAS commissions accommodation for personnel, pledges improved welfare

The Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lt.-Gen. Waidi Shaibu, has reiterated his commitment to the welfare of personnel of the Nigerian Army through the provision of decent accommodation  for officers and soldiers across formations.

The Army chief stated this Tuesday when he commissioned the newly constructed officers’ and soldiers’ quarters at Muhammadu Buhari Cantonment, Giri, Abuja.

Blueprint reports that newly completed accommodation projects comprised the Nigerian Army Aviation coordinator’s residence, 2 deputy coordinators’ residences, five blocks of six flats single officers’ quarters, 27 Senior Non-Commissioned Officers’ quarters and 80 corporals and below wuarters.

 According to him, today’s event marks another significant milestone in our collective efforts to build a stronger, more professional and welfare-oriented Nigerian Army.

He said the commissioning of the residential facilities represents army’s commitment to the wellbeing of personnel and their families, adding that it is part of his soldier first culture.

“It is also a practical demonstration of our resolve to improve the quality of life of officers and soldiers who continue to make enormous sacrifices in the defence of our nation.

“One of the cardinal pillars of my Command Philosophy is the Soldier First Culture, which recognizes that the strength of the Nigerian Army lies in the wellbeing, motivation and combat readiness of its personnel.

” Indeed, a soldier who is adequately catered for, properly accommodated, and assured of his family’s welfare is better positioned to remain focused, disciplined, and committed to accomplishing assigned missions,” he said.

Speaking further, Lieutenant General Shaibu said the Nigerian Army has continued to expand in response to emerging security challenges across the country, noting that the expansion demands for infrastructure, particularly accommodation.

” For this reason, personnel welfare continues to occupy a prominent place in my command philosophy.

“The provision of decent accommodation remains one of the most important welfare requirements of our personnel.

“Beyond serving as places of residence, these facilities provide a conducive environment for our officers, soldiers, and their families to live with dignity and comfort. While we acknowledge that there is still much work to be done,” he said.

Earlier in his welcome address, Commander, Army Headquarters Garrison, Maj.-Gen. John Lar,  lauded the COAS for his  unwavering commitment to the welfare of personnel through the development of critical infrastructures across Nigerian Army barracks, formations, establishment and cantonments.
