Armed bandits killed two farmers Monday morning after invading Faru town in Maradun local government area of Zamfara state, residents of the town have said.

A resident of the area, who spoke to our correspondent on condition of anonymity, said the attackers stormed the town in the early hours while farmers were heading to their farms and began firing shots into the air.

“They besieged the town in the morning while farmers were going to their farms and began shooting into the air,” the resident said.

He added that two people were killed in the attack.

The resident identified the victims as Basharu Hakimi Yarbangi and Mallam Samaila Faru.

He described the situation in the area as dire, saying attacks have become almost daily.

“We are in critical condition as bandits are attacking our area almost every day,” he said.

He stated further that several communities in Maradun LGA are currently under the influence of bandits operating from the Bayan Ruwa forest.

He listed the affected towns to include Magamin Diddi, Kaya, Janbako, Gidan Goga and Faru.

“We need the presence of more security personnel to our area to mitigate the armed terrorists who terrorised our area,” he stated.

The resident called on both the Zamfara state government and the federal government to urgently deploy additional security forces to the area to restore peace and protect farming communities ahead of the harvest season.

Zamfara has continued to grapple with banditry and kidnapping, particularly in rural LGAs bordering forests that serve as hideouts for armed groups.

Farming communities in Maradun, Anka, and Bukkuyum have repeatedly reported attacks that have disrupted agricultural activities and displaced residents.
