Armed bandits have attacked and abducted Yahaya Garba, the former chairman of Gusau local government area and current Zamfara state water board managing director.
He was abducted along the Tsafe-Funtua highway Tuesday.
His driver reportedly sustained a gunshot in the attack. According to eyewitness accounts and security sources, the incident occurred while Garba was traveling from Tsafe toward Funtua in Katsina state.
Report stated that the gunmen intercepted his vehicle, opened fire, and fatally shot the driver before forcing Garba into their vehicle and fleeing into nearby bushes.
Garba is a senior member of the state government and has been involved in several water infrastructure projects across the state.
The Tsafe-Funtua road, which connects Zamfara and Katsina States, has recorded repeated attacks by armed groups in recent months.
Travelers and commercial drivers have repeatedly called for increased security patrols along the corridor.
As of the time of filing this report, the Zamfara state government and the state Police command are yet to release an official statement on the abduction.
Security operatives were said to have launched a search and rescue operation in the surrounding forests.
A government source who asked not to be named said effort is ongoing to secure the safe release of the commissioner.
