Bandits Abduct Zamfara LG Chairman, Kill Four Security Operatives

• Suspected bandits abducted Bungudu Local Government Chairman, Nura Umar Bungudu, during an attack on his residence in Zamfara State.

•  Two police officers and two vigilantes were killed, while security operatives rescued several of the chairman’s children during a pursuit.

•  Residents have called for stronger security measures, citing the attackers’ sophisticated weapons and recurring attacks across the state.

Suspected bandits have abducted the Chairman of Bungudu Local Government Area of Zamfara State, Nura Umar Bungudu, after attacking his residence in Bungudu town and killing four security personnel.

The attack occurred on Thursday night in the Zango area of Bungudu, less than 20 kilometres from Gusau, the Zamfara State capital.

Residents said the gunmen overpowered security operatives guarding the chairman’s residence, killing two police officers and two vigilantes before abducting the council chairman alongside members of his family.

According to eyewitnesses, the attackers initially fled with the chairman, his wife and children. However, security operatives who pursued the assailants succeeded in rescuing four or five of the children, while the chairman remained in captivity.

Residents said reinforcements arrived after the gunmen had escaped, adding that the attackers were heavily armed and outgunned the security personnel who resisted the assault.

The incident has renewed concerns over persistent insecurity in Zamfara State, where communities continue to face attacks, kidnappings and killings by armed groups.

Residents appealed to the Federal Government and security agencies to strengthen security in Bungudu and other vulnerable communities, noting that the attackers often operate with sophisticated weapons and allegedly receive support from informants.

Efforts to obtain official confirmation from the Zamfara State Police Command were unsuccessful as the command’s spokesperson, DSP Yazid Abubakar, did not respond to calls and text messages at the time of filing the report.
