Another US soldier confirmed dead after devastating strikes leave 2 dead
U.S officials said on Sunday that they found the remains of at least one of the two U.S. service members killed in Jordan following an attack from Iran, and that another soldier was killed on Saturday in action in Iraq.
“Yesterday, U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) announced the passing of two U.S. service members and the missing status of one in Jordan following an Iranian attack on July 17. After a thorough search, U.S. military personnel found unidentified remains at the location earlier today,” CENTCOM confirmed on Sunday afternoon. “An examination process to verify the remains is ongoing.”
“Separately, a U.S. service member in northern Iraq was killed in action July 18 during a controlled detonation of unexploded ordnance from a downed Iranian one-way attack drone,” CENTCOM added.
In that incident, the command said another service member was wounded and is receiving treatment for a minor injury.
“CENTCOM is withholding additional information, including the identities of the missing and fallen warriors, out of respect for the families during the notification process,” it concluded.
U.S. Central Command on Saturday confirmed three U.S. casualties in Jordan as service members were targeted by Iranian missile and drone attacks.
Two U.S. service members were killed, and another went missing as they were attacked on Friday, according to CENTCOM.
“On July 17, two U.S. service members in Jordan were killed in action as U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) and partner forces defended against Iranian ballistic missile and drone attacks,” CENTCOM wrote. “Additionally, one service member is currently missing.”
Four more service members were additionally medically evacuated to hospitals. They have since been discharged, according to Centcom. Others suffered minor injuries and have since returned to duty.
CENTCOM is withholding soldiers’ names and other information “out of respect for the families” until 24 hours their next of kin has been notified.
