Anambra: Gunmen kill popular Awka MC Aiza Nwosu, one other

The Anambra state Police command has confirmed the killing of popular comedian, master of ceremonies and media personality, Isaac Nwosu, popularly known as “Aiza”, alongside another unidentified person in separate shooting incidents in Awka, the state capital.

The two victims were reportedly shot at different locations in the city on Sunday, August 30, 2026, by suspected gunmen who were said to have been travelling in a silver-coloured Toyota Corolla. Blueprint reports

Police said the attackers fled the scenes immediately after the shootings, prompting security operatives to launch a manhunt for the suspects.

Police confirm separate attacks

The Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) in Anambra State, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, confirmed the incidents in a statement issued on Monday.

Ikenga said preliminary information available to the command indicated that three unidentified persons travelling in the silver-coloured Toyota Corolla allegedly attacked two individuals at separate locations within Awka.

He said police operatives responded immediately after receiving distress calls and mobilised patrol teams to the affected areas, while efforts were commenced to track down the assailants.

According to him, the bodies of the victims were recovered from Capital City Road in Amaenyi and S.M. Okeke Street in Amaikwo, Awka.

The victims were subsequently taken to a hospital for medical attention, where they were confirmed dead by medical personnel.

Victims identified

The police spokesman said one of the victims was yet to be identified at the time of issuing the statement, while the second victim was identified as Nwosu, popularly known as Aiza.

Nwosu was a familiar face within Awka’s entertainment and media circles, where he had established a reputation through his work as a comedian, master of ceremonies and public announcer.

The circumstances surrounding the attacks remained unclear as of Monday, while the police had not disclosed a possible motive for the killings.

Items recovered from the scenes included N7,550 cash, one Moniepoint ATM card and a pair of slippers, according to the police.

Commissioner orders investigation

Reacting to the killings, the Anambra State Commissioner of Police, CP Nnanna Oji Ama, condemned the incidents, describing them as unacceptable and a direct affront to the peace and security of the state.

Ama consequently ordered that the case be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), Awka, for a discreet and comprehensive investigation.

The commissioner also directed security operatives to intensify patrols, surveillance and intelligence gathering across Awka and neighbouring communities as part of efforts to identify and apprehend the perpetrators.

The police command said the investigation would seek to establish the circumstances surrounding the shootings, identify the suspects and determine the motive behind the attacks.

Police launch manhunt

Ikenga said the command had intensified its manhunt for the suspects and was working to gather information that could lead to their arrest.

He appealed to community leaders, residents, motorists, business owners and other members of the public who may have witnessed the attacks or noticed suspicious movements around the affected areas to provide useful information to the police.

He specifically urged anyone with credible information about the suspects, the vehicle used in the attacks or their movements before and after the incidents to come forward.

According to the PPRO, information supplied to the police would be treated with utmost confidentiality.

He stressed that cooperation between residents and security agencies remained critical to effective policing, particularly in the investigation of violent crimes and the prevention of further attacks.

Death sparks reactions

The killing of Aiza has generated reactions among residents, colleagues and members of the entertainment community in Awka, where he was reportedly well known for his activities as a comedian and MC.

His work as a master of ceremonies and public announcer had made him a recognisable figure at social and entertainment events within the state capital.

The circumstances of his death have therefore heightened concerns among residents over the security situation in parts of Awka, particularly as the police continue their investigation into the separate attacks.

The command assured residents that it remained committed to protecting lives and property and bringing those responsible for the killings to justice.

The police urged members of the public to remain vigilant and promptly report suspicious activities to security agencies as investigations into the killings continue.
