Amazon reveals plan to plant 180 million spekboom plants in South Africa

Amazon is funding a massive project to plant 180 million “spekboom” plants across 200 square miles of damaged land in South Africa’s Eastern Cape.

By planting these drought-resistant shrubs, the project aims to restore the environment, improve soil quality, and help fight climate change by pulling carbon dioxide out of the air—sometimes as effectively as a young tropical rainforest.

Beyond the environmental benefits, it is designed to support the local community by creating around 11,000 jobs by 2030 and providing training in reforestation to local businesses.
