Airtel, Starlink begin commercial satellite-to-mobile service in Africa
Airtel Africa and SpaceX’s Starlink have commercially launched satellite-to-mobile connectivity in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), marking what Airtel describes as the first commercial deployment of Starlink Mobile in Africa.
The development could mark a significant shift in the continent’s telecommunications landscape by allowing compatible smartphones to connect directly to satellites in locations where conventional mobile networks do not reach.
Unlike traditional satellite internet, the service does not require customers to install a satellite dish or purchase specialised equipment. Users with compatible devices can connect when they have a clear view of the sky.
Airtel Africa said the current service supports light data applications, including messaging, while the satellite constellation supporting the service has more than 650 launched satellites.
The commercial deployment follows Airtel Africa’s strategic partnership with SpaceX announced in December 2025 and subsequent testing of Starlink Mobile data and messaging services in Kenya in March 2026.
Airtel Africa CEO, Sunil Taldar, described the launch as a major milestone, saying the combination of Airtel’s terrestrial infrastructure and Starlink’s satellite technology could extend connectivity beyond the traditional limits of mobile networks.
The company said experience gained from the DRC deployment could support expansion into other Airtel markets, subject to regulatory approvals in individual countries.
The DRC presents a particularly important test case because of its vast territory and difficult terrain, which make conventional network expansion expensive and challenging.
Airtel DRC Managing Director, Theirry Diasnoma, said many people in the country live, work or travel beyond the reach of terrestrial infrastructure, making satellite connectivity an additional layer of communications.
For now, customers in the DRC require a compatible LTE Android smartphone and either an active Airtel DRC data bundle or data roaming enabled. Airtel said Apple devices would be supported as the service expands.
The significance of the development extends beyond the DRC. Satellite-to-device technology could fundamentally alter the economics of connecting remote communities and maintaining conventional cell towers are commercially unattractive.
The strongest immediate beneficiaries are likely to be remote communities, farmers, miners, transport operators, humanitarian organisations and health workers. The technology could also provide a backup communications channel during natural disasters or terrestrial network outages.
However, experts caution that satellite-to-mobile connectivity should be viewed as a complement to terrestrial networks, rather than a replacement.
The technology is particularly valuable for coverage extension and emergency communications, but satellite capacity, device compatibility, regulatory approvals and service economics will determine how quickly it can scale.
