‘Accountancy, Biz Admin, Others Going;’ Govt Orders Polys To PhaseOut Non-Tech Courses

The Federal Government has directed polytechnics across Nigeria to begin phasing out non-technical programmes that fall outside their statutory mandate as part of reforms aimed at strengthening Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET).

Minister of Education, Dr. Maruf Alausa, gave the directive in Abuja during the inauguration of the Governing Board of the National Board for Technical Education (NBTE). He said polytechnics should refocus on science, engineering, technology and innovation to produce graduates equipped for Industry 4.0.

According to the minister, the reforms are aligned with President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, which seeks to build a globally competitive workforce by prioritising practical, industry-relevant skills over paper qualifications.

Alausa described TVET as a strategic national priority, stressing that no country can achieve meaningful industrialisation without skilled technicians, technologists, artisans, automation specialists and machine operators.

He also directed the newly inaugurated NBTE board to modernise curricula through Outcome-Based Education by incorporating artificial intelligence, automation, digital technologies, advanced manufacturing and green technologies into technical education programmes.

The minister further instructed the board to accelerate the implementation of the Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) framework in collaboration with the Industrial Training Fund (ITF) and other stakeholders. The initiative is expected to certify skilled artisans under the National Skills Qualification Framework, improve employability, enhance access to finance, increase eligibility for government contracts and promote labour mobility across the ECOWAS region.

Alausa charged the board to uphold transparency, accountability and fiscal discipline, ensuring that investments in technical education translate into improved skills acquisition, youth employment and national productivity.

Responding on behalf of the board, Chairman Prof. Babatunde Salako pledged support for the Federal Government’s TVET reforms. He said one of the board’s immediate priorities would be changing the perception of technical education as a “second-choice” option and promoting it as a respected pathway to employment, entrepreneurship and national development.

Earlier, NBTE Executive Secretary Prof. Idris Bugaje described the inauguration as historic, noting that it marked the constitution of the board after more than five years. He commended the minister for restoring the board and pledged the agency’s commitment to implementing the administration’s technical education reform agenda.
