87 Year-Old Ugandan Veteran Politician, Gen Moses Ali, Is Dead

KAMPALA — Uganda is in mourning following the death of veteran politician and retired military officer Gen. Moses Ali. The Member of Parliament for Adjumani West County and former Second Deputy Prime Minister died on Saturday at about 4:25 p.m. at Nakasero Hospital in Kampala, where he had been receiving treatment.

The news was confirmed by several leaders, including NRM Vice Chairman for Eastern Uganda, Capt. Mike Mukula. “It is with profound sorrow and a heavy heart that I have received the sad news of the passing of my dear friend, distinguished patriot, freedom fighter and statesman, General Moses Ali,” Mukula said.

Gen. Ali was 87 years old at the time of his death. His family said he had been admitted with unspecified ailments and had gone into a coma before passing.

Born on April 5, 1939 in Adjumani District, Ali was one of Uganda’s longest-serving public servants. His career spanned the military, politics and public administration over more than six decades.

He most recently served as Second Deputy Prime Minister and Deputy Leader of Government Business in Parliament from 2021 until May 2026. President Museveni omitted him from the new Cabinet in May 2026 on medical grounds. He however retained his parliamentary seat for Adjumani West County in the 12th Parliament.

Throughout his career, Gen. Ali held several senior government positions including Minister of Internal Affairs, Minister of Tourism, Wildlife and Antiquities, and Minister for Disaster Preparedness, Refugees and Relief. He also served as First Deputy Prime Minister from 2016 to 2021 and Third Deputy Prime Minister from 1989 to 1991.

His life mirrored Uganda’s turbulent political history. From serving in Uganda’s pre-independence army to becoming one of Idi Amin’s most trusted ministers, he later led the Uganda National Rescue Front rebel movement after exile and eventually emerged as one of President Museveni’s longest-serving allies.

Described as a soldier, rebel, peacemaker and statesman, Ali was widely regarded for his contribution to national reconciliation, peace-building and public service. Mukula said his contribution to peace, national unity and reconstruction “would remain part of Uganda’s history”.

News of his passing has prompted an outpouring of condolences from political leaders, colleagues and members of the public. The government and the family are expected to announce funeral arrangements and further details in due course.

Gen. Moses Ali’s death marks the end of an era for one of Uganda’s most experienced and influential statesmen. At the time of his death he was still serving as MP for Adjumani West County, a seat he had only retained in January.
