2027: Tinubu’s Group to Meet Ohanaeze, to Beg Obi to Step Down
The Southeast chapter of the Renewed Hope for Greater Nigeria (RHGN) has unveiled plans to engage prominent Igbo leaders in persuading former Anambra State governor and NDC presidential candidate Peter Obi to step down from the 2027 presidential race in favor of President Bola Tinubu’s re-election bid.
Speaking in Owerri after a strategy meeting, RHGN Southeast leader, Mazi Franklin Ngoforo, said the group would approach Ohanaeze Ndigbo under Senator John Azuta Mbata, alongside respected statesmen such as Chief Emeka Anyaoku and Commodore Ebitu Ukiwe, to lead a delegation to Obi.
Ngoforo stressed that the move was not aimed at diminishing Obi’s political stature but at urging him to prioritize long-term strategic interests of the Southeast over immediate electoral ambitions.
“The issue is bigger than one election and bigger than one individual. The political question before Ndigbo should be how to turn today’s alliances into tomorrow’s presidency,” Ngoforo said.
Ngoforo argued that supporting Tinubu now could strengthen Southeast-Southwest ties and position the region for future presidential opportunities.
Obi’s withdrawal, he said, would not end his presidential journey but defer it to a more favorable time.
The group believes aligning with Tinubu could yield reciprocal benefits when power rotates back to the South.
Ngoforo urged Ndigbo to view the 2027 election not merely as a contest but as an opportunity to build goodwill and secure long-term political dividends.
