2027 elections: Ogun needs leaders who will listen, plan, deliver – Akinseye

The Senior Special Assistant on Special Duties to the Ogun State Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) youth leader, Hon. Segun Akinseye, has called for a new leadership direction in the state, anchored on accountability, effective representation and people-oriented governance.

Akinseye, speaking ahead of the 2027 elections, said the state deserved leaders who would listen to residents, develop clear policies and translate government plans into tangible improvements in the lives of citizens.

He said the challenges facing Ogun required more than political promises, stressing that the next phase of development must be driven by vision, competence, accountability and genuine commitment to public service.

According to him, both the executive and legislature have critical roles to play in building a state where government works effectively for its people.

He noted that while the governor is expected to provide strategic direction, formulate policies and drive infrastructure and economic growth, members of the Ogun State House of Assembly must equally represent their constituents, make people-focused laws and scrutinise government activities.

“Ogun State deserves leadership that listens, plans and delivers. Our people should not have to beg for the basic necessities of good governance. They deserve roads that are motorable, schools that function, healthcare facilities that serve them and an economy that creates opportunities for our young people,” he said.

Akinseye identified road infrastructure, education, healthcare, agriculture, youth development, support for small businesses and responsible management of public resources as key priorities for the state.

He also called for greater investment in young people through quality education, vocational training, entrepreneurship support, technology and employment opportunities.

“We need an Ogun State where development is not concentrated in a few locations, but reaches every local government, ward and community. Every constituency deserves effective representation, and every citizen deserves to feel the impact of government,” he said.

On the legislature, Akinseye urged lawmakers to remain a strong voice for their constituents, saying effective oversight was essential to a healthy democracy.

“The House of Assembly must ask the right questions, scrutinise public expenditure and make laws that address the realities of our communities,” he said.

He, however, maintained that cooperation between the executive and legislature should not undermine accountability, noting that both arms could work together while maintaining democratic checks and balances.

Akinseye urged citizens, particularly youths, to examine the records, capacity and programmes of politicians seeking their votes in 2027.

He said the development of Ogun should remain a collective responsibility regardless of political, ethnic or sectional differences.

“We may belong to different political groups and come from different communities, but we share one future. The development of Ogun State must be our common project,” he said.
