2027 Election Row: Okolugbo Slams Conflicting Judgments By Justices Omotosho And Umaru

According to a report by Arise News on Saturday July 18, 2026, political commentator Okolugbo has expressed concern over conflicting judicial decisions relating to electoral processes ahead of Nigeria’s 2027 general election, warning that inconsistent court rulings could create uncertainty for political parties and other stakeholders.

Speaking on the matter, Okolugbo said the judiciary should provide clear and consistent interpretations of electoral laws to prevent confusion during preparations for the polls.

According to him, differing judgments from the courts risk undermining confidence in the electoral process and complicating compliance with established regulations.

He specifically referenced the judgments delivered by Justice Omotosho and Justice Umaru, noting that the two rulings appeared to reach different conclusions on issues affecting political parties and the conduct of elections.

“Justice Omotosho and Justice Umaru gave conflicting judgments. We can’t keep having the courts confuse us,” Okolugbo said.

He maintained that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) possesses the authority to regulate its electoral procedures, provided its actions remain within the legal framework established by the Electoral Act.

According to him, the commission can exercise its regulatory powers as long as it complies with the statutory timelines governing the nomination and substitution of candidates.

Okolugbo explained that the law provides political parties with a 120-day deadline before an election to submit the names of their candidates to INEC, while candidate substitutions must be completed no later than 90 days before the election where permitted by law.
